The same applies to the situation when you stop Celexa treatment: wait for at least 2 weeks to let Celexa be completely eliminated from your body before your MAOI treatment. Tell your physician if you develop an allergic response to Celexa, any of its components or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in general. Celexa is practically well tolerated, but you should notify your medical specialist if you are a kidney or liver patient, or you suffer from convulsions or bipolar syndrome (characterized by an alternation between extreme elation and deep depression). Also inform your physician if you were or are addicted to alcohol or drugs, or you developed dependence to any drug. If you had suicidal intentions in the past, Celexa might not be for you. Therefore, your doctor will most likely have to prescribe you another medicine or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor to treat your condition if you experienced any of the above. Your doctor will warn you about the possibility of having suicidal ideas while you take Celexa for the first time. That is quite normal for people under twenty-four and you should always contact your doctor when it happens to you. Treatment of anxiety disorders can sometimes be quite a challenge not only for the patients but also for their family members and people around them. Family members should be warned about the possible alternation between positive and negative attitude, and other unexpected mood variations in the patients. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are contra-indicated for expecting or nursing mothers since they are known for causing very dangerous conditions in respiratory airways of little babies. At the same time if a woman needs this medicine for controlling her anxiety disorder, Celexa can be vitally important. Therefore you should let your doctor weigh all cons and pros and choose the right dosage for your Celexa treatment so that it does not do any harm to your baby. Do not give Celexa to anyone who has the same anxiety symptoms as you do but has not been prescribed to take it, especially if the person is under eighteen. Prescription: Celexa is prescribed to depressed people or those who suffer from anxiety disorders. Take Celexa as long and as much as your physician tells you in order to assure the effectiveness of the medicine and the treatment. People taking Celexa are usually advised to take the drug daily at approximately the same time. Read the instructions that come with the medicine carefully to make sure that you follow them correctly. If you take liquid solution of Celexa, use a measuring jar for a correct dosage. Warnings: If misused or overdosed, Celexa might cause allergic response. Some of its symptoms include: skin eruption, itching, labored respiration and swollen face. Contact your doctor immediately or seek immediate professional help if you overdose. Unwanted Adverse Reaction: Usually antidepressants do not cause physical dependence; however, they may have significant adverse effects. Most Celexa’s unwanted side effects are behavioral. Contact your medical professional if you experience any of the following: mood swings, depressed state of mind, nervousness, aggression, hostile or destructive thoughts, obsessive apprehensions, intense fears, worries, panic, general anxiety, impulsive behavior, insomnia, or excessive energy. However sometimes Celexa also affects your physical functioning and performance. In this case common side effects are: spasms, trembling, chill, uncomfortable sensations in the muscles, bad coordination of movements, headache, abundant sweat secretion, rapid pulse, stomach pain or gastric indigestion, sexual dysfunction or impotency. If you experience any of the conditions mentioned above, call your doctor immediately. Be prepared to have suicidal intentions when you take a thymoleptic or any other medicine used to alleviate depression for the first time. During the first 3 months you should have regular appointments with your physician who will monitor your progress and change the dosage if the adverse effects are severe. Sometimes Celexa treatment may be continued even with side effects. Most mild adverse effects that can go away with time if you continue using the drug. Overdose: If you believe that you overdosed, seek fast medical help even if you feel well as most commonly signs of Celexa overdose appear with the lapse of time. Some of these signs are: dizziness, retching, shivering, excessive perspiration, tachypnoe or convulsions. Alcoholic drinks or medicine that contains alcohol can trigger some of the common Celexa’s adverse effects. Therefore, you should not take any alcohol with Celexa. Avoid taking Celexa with carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR , Carbatrol, Equetro), cimetidine, lithium-based medicaments, members of the triptan family of drugs (frovatriptan, almotriptan, sumatriptan and others). Since Celexa is capable of making Warfarin’s more effective, you should avoid mixing these two drugs. Warfarin is an anti-coagulant drug used to treat particular medical conditions involving formation of blood clots in the blood. Any other drugs that cause sleepiness (for example, neuromuscular relaxants, over the counter medicine for caught and cold, some anesthetics, and other antianxiety drugs and antidepressants) might make you even drowsier and are not recommended if you plan to drive or perform other activities that require your attention or concentration.
